On Tuesday, June 28, at America House Chisinau organized a watch party event. High school students got the chance to watch the livestream of the International Cooperation for Planetary Defense talk about asteroid impact risks and planetary defense.
They learned more about the strategy and methods behind international cooperation on planetary defense from expert panelists who are at the forefront of scientific, technological, and diplomatic efforts to ensure the global community is informed and prepared for the risks of asteroid impacts:
-Jennifer R. Littlejohn, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs
-Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer
-Dr. Humberto Campins, Pegasus Professor of Physics and Astronomy, University of Central Florida, Orlando
-Thomas D. Jones, PhD, Chairman, ASE Committee on Near Earth Objects
-Dr. Elena Adams, DART Mission Systems Engineer
-Ettore Perozzi, Space Situational Awareness Office, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI)
Asteroid Day is an annual global event held on the anniversary of the Tunguska event in 1908, when an asteroid leveled about 2,150 square kilometres forest in Siberia. The United Nations has proclaimed it be observed globally on June 30 every year in its resolution.
Asteroids consist of clay and silicate rocks, and are dark in appearance. They are among the most ancient objects in the solar system. The S-types (“stony”) are made up of silicate materials and nickel-iron. Also, they may have a huge impact on Earth, that is why it’s important to raise awareness on this problem.
Before the livestream, participants shared their knowledge about asteroids and reflected on what they would do if the next day the planet was hit by an asteroid. The conversation increased the interest of participants.
During the stream, teenagers found out about the possible asteroids’ impact on the planet Earth and the importance to raise awareness on international cooperation. They realized how important it is to cooperate between countries nowadays and involve people in discussions about the topic. Speakers and experts also answered the questions of the online audience. They prepared and informed the global community about the risks of asteroids.
At the end, participants remained concerned, still, they were thankful to the speakers for shedding light on such an important topic.
